Snowwhite and Rosered

Description

Once upon a time there was a poor old mare and her two daughters, they lived happily together alone at the edge of the Everfree Forest. One filly was called Rosered, for she was red and warm as a summer rose. The other was called Snowwhite, for she was as pale and delicate as a winter rose. The two fillies kept house for their poor old mother, and the three of them were poor as church mice and just as happy, for they had each other. One cold, winter's night, as the three ponies were getting ready to lay down for the night a knocking came at their door. Rosered opened it and what should she behold but a great, shaggy bear outside!

"Please, miss, it's quite cold out and I was looking for a warm place to spend the night." Said the bear.

"Good bear," replied the old mare, "Of course you may come in and warm yourself at our fire. I'm afraid all we can offer you is the rug on the floor, for we have very little."

"A roof over my head and a warm fire is plenty for me, thank you kindly ma'am." So in came the bear, who settled himself on the little rug by the fire and sighed with happiness to be warm. Rosered and Snowwhite fetched brushes and brushed the bear's fur until all the snow he had been covered in was knocked off and swept tidily out the door. The rest of the evening was spent chatting comfortably by the fire until all were tired and went to bed.

The next morning the bear kindly said, "Thank you very much for your hospitality, but I'd like to go out now."

"Come again tonight, it would be so sad for you to be cold and shivering out there all alone."

"Thank you kindly, ma'am, I think I will." So the bear went out, the three ponies spent their day keeping their home tidy and organized, then come nightfall again there was a knocking at the door and the bear sitting politely outside. The whole winter passed in this manner, the bear coming in at night and leaving in the morning, always promising to come back the next night. Then, the morning that winter was wrapped up, the bear looked sadly at his three friends as he solemnly stated, "I have appreciated your kindness so much that I cannot express it in words, but I won't be returning this night. There are wicked pigs about, and I must guard an important treasure from them. In the winter it was so very easy, for the ground was frozen and nothing could dig through, but now that spring is coming I must be ever vigilant. Good bye my friends." The three ponies wept bitterly at this goodbye, but what be must be and so he left. Rosered and Snowwhite went out with their mother and helped the nearby village clean up all the snow and bring spring to their home, the returning birds and sunshine brought light back into their hearts and they were soon smiling and laughing again.

Then one day Rosered and Snowwhite went to their village to pick up supplies, and on the way they saw a curious sight. A pig who seemed to have got his fine coat caught in a bush...

The second story in Glimmer Dust's favorite collection: Rose Red and Snow White. It's a quaint story about two sisters who love each other dearly and how their kindness to each other and everyone around them led them to marrying a handsome prince each. They're young girls, but end up married in the end so I wanted them to seem about teenager-ish. And since their family is poor I decided, based on the Hearth Warming episode, that they must be Earth Ponies. I also wanted to include the cursed prince, who is a Unicorn even though you can't really see it, so I threw a bear skin over him.

Using the background texture as shadow is a nice touch.
